OFFICIAL PARTNER AND TIMEKEEPER OF THE MATTERHORN ULTRACKS RACES IN ZERMATT
Geneva, August 29th, 2018 – Alpina watches is proud to be the official timekeeper and sponsor of the Matterhorn Ultracks which was held on the 25th and 26th of August in Zermatt, Switzerland. More than 2000 runners attended this spectacular manifestation focused on the ultimate sports performance in altitude; world class trail running. The weekend was full of impressive winning performances featuring remarkable Swiss champions crossing the finish line.
Alpina Watches x Matterhorn Ultracks
For each race, Alpina watches rewarded an Alpina Horological Smartwatch to the winners of the competition in their respective categories (m/f). Runners set impressive trail running sports records, in a memorable mountain sports atmosphere. Overall, 7 out of 8 winners from the “Vertical”(2.3 km – 655m), “Active”(km), “Mountain” (32 km -2’000m) and “Sky” (49 km – 3’600m) races were Swiss athletes. The weather forecast set the race in perfect running conditions for the participants.
Matterhorn Ultracks winners
Victrtical» race but also the “Active” race into her book of victories. Swiss athlete, Andreas Steindl, also qualified himself in the “Vertical” race with an impressive track record. Followed by great performances, the demanding 49km «Sky» race, Martin Anthamatten, non-other than Victoria Kreuzer’s partner, the local hero pulled away from the field to finish first in an impressive 5h00’24. On the other hand, women’s «Sky» race was the only race with international winners such as champion: Virginia Perez Mesonero, qualifying herself with a 5h56’06 time for this incredible race. At the scenic «Mountain» race runners had to cope with 32km race and an elevation of 2’000m. Sine 2017, Stephan Wenk, reigning champion beat his previous course record with over 5 minutes, finishing in a striking 2h41’23. The women’s victory went to Swiss runner Mirjam Niederberger. This race set impressive and thrilling track records for the winner’s in their categories.
Matterhorn Ultracks
Founded in 2013, the Matterhorn Ultracks has become an renowned competition in the trail running world by both elite athletes and amateurs of races. This competition offers to its participants an exceptional course of various distances and a variety of difficulty levels in one of the most beautiful scenery of the Swiss Alps. Zermatt epitomizes the image of Switzerland and high level winter sports: with high alpine summits and infinites ski slopes. Alpina watches presence was unmissable! The brand’s logo was present in various spots of the charming world renowned village of Zermatt such as: on the organizations flags, booths, on the competitors sports attire etc. Spectators had the opportunity to watch the race from the main place in the village or for more adventurous crowds, they had the opportunity to cheer the competitors from key locations around the trail.
The Sky race at 3’100 meters
One of the most breathtaking tracks! This race is a true immersion into the wild spaces and highest mountains of the Swiss Alps. It requires a lot of determination and courage from its runners to reach the highest summits, combining speed and technique, without fearing to reach and climb up the Gornergrat (3’100m). After all the efforts and at the top of the highest European summit, the runners had the chance to admire the panoramic view of the majestic Matterhorn in awe.
