ABOUT MATTERHORN ULTRAKS
Matterhorn Ultraks combines Ski Touring and Trail Running; both competitions will take place against the stunning backdrop of the Matterhorn in Zermatt in 2013.
Our goal with Matterhorn Ultraks is twofold: to create a race that will enter into sporting legend, while also responding to the increasing popularity of both disciplines and giving newcomers the opportunity to have a go.
The wintertime SkiTour, hosted in a magical Alpine landscape, will test the most talented competitors (porterage, glacier safety, crossing ridges that are seldom travelled and much more), while also allowing the less experienced to perform at a level they are comfortable with on courses
that are marked out and made safe for the event.
The summertime Trail Run will be providing equal challenge and opportunity for the most discerning Trail runner and the newcomer respectively.
Both events will have fully secured back up routes that will guarantee competition irrespective of weather conditions.
Matterhorn Ultraks will also offer a new and intense spectator experience: a giant screen with race tracking and commentary installed at Church Square in Zermatt will allow the public to enter into the spirit of the sport while enjoying the resort and waiting for the finish line to be crossed.
For the more adventurous, there is also the option to make the most of the excellent infrastructure on offer and by riding up the mountain to cheer on the competitors from key locations around the course.
Zermatt, at the foot of the Matterhorn, the most photographed mountain in the world, is a Swiss icon in itself. Encircled by 38 towering Alpine peaks of over 4,000m, it is without doubt the ideal venue for a competition that aims to set a new standard in SkiTour and
Trail Running by attracting the largest number of competitors and spectators.

«The Matterhorn massif looked menacing, overshadowing the Ultraks 46K course,
6th leg of the Skyrunner® World Series in Zermatt Saturday, but the 640 runners at the start line were not intimidated. Local runner Marc Lauenstein and American Megan Kimmel both delivered a captivating performance at the 4th edition of this picture-postcard event.»
